” “My intention was to take them and adorn my customers with them in a way that made someone wearing one of my garments feel cool, giving them that sense of “I’ve arrived!” I wanted to really make my customers stand out so that they felt like a celebrity in one of my pieces.” -Dapper Dan
Malik grew up with a avid love for design, whether it was in apparel or in architecture. His grandmother encouraged him to start a subscription to the magazine, Architectural Digest, where be began to draw inspiration from various projects from famous architectural designers to award winning projects. Malik initially began exploring his passion by majoring in architecture at the High School of Art and Design located in midtown New York. After graduating in 2015, Malik continued his architectural endeavors at Thomas Jefferson University. After his first year of architecture in college, although he still very much enjoyed architecture, Malik began to ask himself whether or not architecture was the form of design expression that he was looking for. Recalling his love growing up for magazines and the culture behind it Malik switched over to graphic design, which allowed him to use many of his skills he learned while doing architecture. Malik took a graphic design course here he learned the ins and out of putting a book or a magazine together; not long after during his break from school, he began using his phone to documents activities his friends and himself did, from museum visits to hanging near a beach. This ultimately was the beginning of Malik’s journey to begin his very own publication called MSKF Magazine. As a visual communicator and graphic designer, Malik uses his magazine for both lifestyle and fashion; the two compliments one another very nicely by establishing a mood. Some of the imagery in Malik’s pieces often refers to the history of African Americans or references black excellence. Please check out Malik’s publications by clicking the hyperlink above!
Q + A Time
Owning your own publication is no easy feat! Tell us how you got into and started it?
” I have always loved magazines and story telling, my first subscription was to architectural digest and I always looked forward to getting it and learning about the design process of an architect and learning how clients wanted things done. I remember getting the issue with Will and Jada Pinket Smith and falling in love with architecture even more than before. Before I had started the magazine I was taking a class about learning your way around indesign. Over that spring break I made the first issue which was initially just a journal of events like the Kanye West “Life of Pablo” pop up shop in New York and taking my friends to visit MoMA for the first time, everything was shot on my Samsung Galaxy Note 4. I never thought about what it could become or how long I would be working on this thing for, the first issue was 32 pages, now sending off the 9th issue to print with 100 pages and larger format.” – Malik Fequiere
I can see in your response how important visual communication is to you. For yourself, what does the name of your publication mean?
“The name is my initials, MSKF. Originally the magazine was supposed to be a one off for my friends and myself, I didn’t think about making into something until a friend was like you should keep doing this. I kept the name because it still felt like that personal touch.” – Malik Fequiere
I’m glad you decided to do it! Have you faced any opposition as you pursued this career?
“I think the only opposition that I have is with myself, and that little negative Nancy in the back of my head saying its not worth it. My friends and family support this and I greatly appreciate them for that. My grandmother was the one who got me the subscription to Arch Digest and told me stories of how my great grandfather wanted to be an architect and the stories is what made me fall in love with it. I don’t do it for money or notoriety, I love doing it because it allows people to be showcased in the best light, I get to talk to people about design and their process and offer this physical manifestation of their thoughts.” – Malik Fequiere
