Caitlin Berndt, or as her friends call her, Caity, is a professor in the Art department at the City College of New York that teaches various art courses ranging from watercolor, to beginner and intermediate drawing classes, which uses a wide range of mediums. Caity’s love for teaching art classes is rooted in her own passion for painting and altruistic desire to help students cultivate their skills in art. Her abilities as an artist is phenomenal to say the least, as she uses watercolor, oil paint, and fluid acrylic to emulate stunning composition that convey moments in time, or a certain “attitude.” One of her recent series of paintings are these whimsical and almost dream-like compositions where she paints a moment in time, which ranges from bustling activities to capturing stillness; it begins to allude to the recollection of a fond memory (see images A and B below). These images are very textured which inherently is an interesting paradox to how soft the edges of the images are. At the same time it’s almost synonymous with the idea digging into your consciousness to bring a memory to the surface; the recollection of that memory could be “rough” and not necessary “sharp.” To learn more about Caitlin’s work and her art exhibitions, please visit her website by clicking here, Caitlin-berndt.com. While there is a poetry to Caity’s art pieces, another wonder and amazement is her love for helping others.

I have to break the fourth wall to really communicate to each of you what an amazing human being Caitlin is. I’ve actually taken her intermediate drawing course during my undergraduate years in college; she is an excellent professor, but more importantly a friend. Throughout my life I’ve had many art professors, coming from a background as an artist myself, but there has always been a disconnect between the relationship between student and teacher; it’s always been a, “Okay this is the proper technique to draw this, now do that as an assignment, come in and get a grade.” On the contrary, in Caitlin’s class, learning and honing artistic skills was done in a series of spontaneous exercises which both challenged and taught us very interesting techniques for efficiently activating our composition. The projects were just as interesting as well! I will never forget our first project for Caity’s class where my partners and I made a multi-medium piece that functioned as a proclamation of the reaction to the Amazon forest fires, to the fire in Notre Dame. Both inside and outside the classroom, Caity encouraged me by even taking an interest in my architectural work, giving me advice and resources regarding an artist who I was using as a precedent for my studio projects. Even outside of school itself, she was there for me and supported me as I put forward several projects for this platform, even offering to put in recommendations for me for a job at an architectural office. Caitlin is heavily invested in the welfare of her students not because that is what the job description entails, but because she genuinely cares. Even on the subject of equity for women, and anti-violence towards minorities in America, Caitlin is vocal and uses her social media to share relevant information to bring attention to some of these issues. Thank you for being my friend Caity; I hope there are more teachers like you out there who are so mindful to his or her students. You never know who may need that kindness.
Responses From Caitlin
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of “Equity” and why?
“When I think of equity I think of fairness, and more specifically, how we do not live in a society that is fair…It’s overwhelming to really absorb that…When it comes to myself, I often deflect, focusing on people that are more marginalized than myself and trying to support and empower my students and loved ones. I also take small steps every day to maintain and cultivate self-love. I often feel overcome with intense sadness and anger and feelings of…What do I do? Where do I start? How to make a difference? “Life isn’t fair”, you know, that just doesn’t cut any more, and it never did. Having a strong sense of self is crucial in making change, so I try to start there…” – Caitlin
Has there ever been a point in your life where you felt you had to prove yourself, or work harder than those around you? How did you tackle that event?
“Unfortunately, like many women and marginalized people, I have often made every rejection, lack of opportunity, or act of inequity my fault–if only I had worked harder, faster, smarter, better, etc….But…when I read the statistics, on some level, I know that that’s not true…It’s complex. I have been very, very, lucky and privileged in so many ways. Sometimes it feels as though I’ve inherited a self-loathing that is so deep that it clouds me from seeing the ways that I have been mistreated. I work every day to unlearn what the patriarchy has pushed on to me and to nurture self love, so that when I am in a position of power I can work to right these wrongs. ” – Caitlin
Women honestly deserve more than just a day or month out of the whole year to receive recognition, love and support. In what ways do you believe society can perpetually and proactively acknowledge and encourage women?
“Ask them to share their stories.
Pay women the same as men.” – Caitlin
