07 - International Women's month

Perpetual series  – (Series will be recurring/ revisited from time to time)
March is a special time in the year because it’s also known as “Women’s History Month” as well as the 8th being “International Women’s Day;” one highlights pinnacle moment’s in U.S. history where women ignited and led forth a movement that redefined societal standards and combated stereotypes toward women that has been deeply rooted into our culture. Meanwhile, International Women’s Day functions as a commemoration for the social, political, and cultural achievements women made bringing attention to equity and justice. While the historical component is crucial to showing the progress made on this roadmap to inclusivity and equity, there still remains a present need today – advocates whose voices are amplified perpetually to make the goals of this movement come to fruition.

There are many amazing women out there that year round makes a difference in their own lives and the lives of those around them by their sheer determination, wit and amazing gifts. These women are jewels and inspirations because they are a reflection of the limitless possibilities a person has when driven by her passion. We believe that women today are making history by the second and deserve more than just a day to be recognized. DB studios, for the rest of March and into April, will celebrate amazing individuals from various backgrounds and professions, giving you all a glimpse into their lives, their love, interests and what drives them.

This series may only be a month, but our goal is to bring to light and start the conversation regarding how we can perpetually elevate women and do our parts to normalize equity. Seeing each of these amazing features is also to encourage each of you to reflect on and amplify the voices of women in your own community! A voice on its own may not be heard, but when voices resound together, it becomes a strong shout! Indeed this platform will pay recognition women as often as possible throughout the year.

06 - Colored* : The Black Renaissance

The term “colored” has a negative connotation that was birthed from a dark history. This term is synonymous for many with the division, stereotyping, slavery, and death of black people all across America and other parts of the world.  However, the denotation of this word has an intriguing definition:

Colored (/ˈkələrd/):  adjective
1. having a color or colors, especially as opposed to being black, white, or neutral.

The part that jumped out was when it said, “as opposed to being black, white…” This denotes that the term should not and cannot describe any racial group. Black people have been labeled by their skin shade for centuries; being called “colored people” as to fit us in a specialized group that is separated from others. The primary motive of course was dehumanization. But the definition of colored itself defies this notion as should we. Our skin color doesn’t define what type of person someone will be. In the literal and figurative sense we aren’t just black, or white, or even in between; every person is their own unique spectrum of colors. This is why we call this series “Colored” and the Renaissance because we are reviving and transforming this narrative of what it means to be a person that is colored.

My colleague and friend, Daniel Akinsulire, and myself are fascinated with how far black men and women have come, but likewise believe that black people today are still overlooked by labels and stereotypes. It shouldn’t only be society’s definition of a successful black person; i.e., an athlete, rapper, or dancer. The every day man and woman of color that works hard to drive their dreams and ambition should have a voice. So DB Studios wants to amplify that with this series.

01 Emerging Professionals

This was my first photo-series on my Instagram where I began to introduce some of my photography. This series celebrates emerging professionals that either graduated or are on their way to completing their academic career. Since this series was relatively short, it’s certainly one I’d like to revisit in the future; most of the people featured studied architecture too, so I am hoping to get people with other areas of study as well.
